Are you paying monthly for storage, invoicing software, or document sharing? You don't have to anymore.
PiWork is your own "cloud" — physically at your home or office. Files, invoices, and automations run on your hardware, not on someone else's servers abroad.
Your code. Your data. Your rules.
PiWork is built on a Raspberry Pi 5 with an NVMe SSD and a set of pre-installed open-source applications for a small business or freelancer. Plug it into your network, open a browser, and start using it — no tinkering, no monthly fees, no cloud.
What can PiWork do?
- Shared storage and device backup — Nextcloud automatically backs up files from the phones and computers of all team members; shared folders, calendars, contacts, and a wiki in one place — like Google Workspace, but on your own server
- Invoicing and accounting — Akaunting is open-source accounting software for freelancers and small businesses; create and send invoices, manage expenses, maintain a client database, with support for EN/CZ and other languages
- Network-wide ad blocking — PiHole blocks ads and tracking on all devices at once, with no need to install any browser extensions
- Automation with AI agents — pre-installed n8n connects apps and automates repetitive tasks: sending invoices, notifications, marketing tasks, legal research, proposals; AI agents can replace a whole range of routine activities
- Full server backup — Duplicati regularly backs up the PiWork to your external drive or remote storage
- One-click expansion — via CasaOS you can install additional apps at any time: Paperless-ngx for document management, Vaultwarden for password management, and dozens more
PiWork vs. cloud service subscriptions?
A small business or freelancer today typically pays separately for Google Workspace, separately for invoicing software, and separately for storage. Monthly costs add up quickly — and data is scattered across third-party servers in various countries.
PiWork consolidates all these features onto a single piece of hardware for a one-time price. No monthly fees, no vendor lock-in. The software is open-source — it works today, in five years, and in ten, with no risk of a vendor raising prices or discontinuing the service.
A Raspberry Pi 5 at idle consumes approximately 5 W. Annual electricity costs are negligible.
Honestly: who is PiWork right for, and who isn't it right for?
PiWork is a good fit if…
- you're a freelancer or small business paying for multiple cloud services at once
- you need invoicing, shared storage, and automation without monthly fees
- you want sensitive business data physically with you, not on a third-party server
- you want a system you can tailor to your needs and expand at any time
- you're comfortable with basic web interface use — management is done through a web browser
PiWork is not a good fit if…
- you want a fully managed solution with zero configuration on your part — no one will set up backups or add users for you; a basic willingness to Google things or ask ChatGPT is a must. BTW: an AI chat will happily write a complete n8n automation for you.
- you need enterprise Google Workspace for dozens of external collaborators with a guaranteed SLA
You don't need to be a network administrator or a programmer. CasaOS is managed through a clean web interface — no command line required. An extensive community, guides on opentux.eu, and tools like ChatGPT are ready to lend a hand during your first steps. For more complex configurations, we offer remote and in-person assistance.
How does PiWork work?
At its core is the Raspberry Pi 5 — a small, quiet, and powerful microcomputer fitted with an NVMe SSD in a compact aluminium chassis. Connect it via LAN cable to your home or office network, and from that moment on it's accessible from any device on the network.
The application manager CasaOS displays all installed services in a clean web dashboard — you launch, stop, and manage applications with a single click, no command line needed. Each application (Nextcloud, Akaunting, n8n, PiHole…) runs in its own Docker container on its own port, keeping them isolated from each other and easy to update.
Access from outside your home or office is handled by a VPN (WireGuard or Tailscale) — a secure, encrypted connection without exposing the server directly to the internet.
