A pre-installed, compact open-source storage solution built on the popular Raspberry Pi 5 board and utilizing Open Media Vault and Nextcloud software. It offers low energy consumption and flexible customization options to meet your needs. It enables automatic centralized data backups from your devices, provides a unified space for viewing photos and videos, and offers advanced features such as a home wiki, shared calendar, office tools, and many other optional extensions.
This version includes a 240 GB SSD drive in position SSD1, where the operating system, Open Media Vault, and NextCloud are installed. It also contains 2x4TB SSD drives labeled diskA and diskB. All files from Nextcloud are directed to diskA, which are archived nightly to diskB using rsync. Everything is pre-configured to fit our tutorial.
Why did we choose SSD?
Due to the affordability of SSDs in recent years, the difference compared to HDDs is no longer so significant. SSDs offer several key advantages:
- Significantly higher access time - typically when copying a large number of small files such as photos, work, and personal documents, you will appreciate the multiple speeds
- Higher read/write speed compared to HDD - you are more likely to encounter the bandwidth of the home/business network (usually 1 Gbps), which is about 125 MB/s, or WiFi network
- Silent, no vibrations, no mechanical parts
- Negligible power consumption
